This Three-Time Tony-Nominated Musical is Coming to Fort Worth—Check It Out!
Journey back in time to the Harlem Renaissance (1920-1940) when audiences flocked to the area’s popular nightclubs to see the greatest talents entertain. Artists like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday created a golden age of music with their exciting sounds and glamorous shows. You’ll jam, jump, and jive to this exuberant, three-time Tony-nominated musical revue.
Based on the original book by Loften Mitchell, “Bubbling Brown Sugar” opens in the 1970s. After traveling through time, Sage, Checkers, Jim, and Ella find themselves at an unnamed speakeasy in the 1920s. Sage is excited to see Judy Cantrell but is put off by the waiter, who initially tries to deny them service before overcharging for drinks. When Charles pays for their drinks, Sage is convinced that he and Judy should join their tour.
The group tours the club scene, visiting locations like the 101 Ranch, Connie's Inn, Dickie Wells, and Saratoga. Judy and Charlie, having lost Checkers and the rest of the group, continue to explore Harlem on their own. Everyone reconvenes at Small's Paradise for one final celebration. Though Ella wishes she and Jim could stay in the past forever, Sage implores her to instead look toward the future.
This production contains strong language, which some parents may consider unsuitable for young children. Tickets prices may vary and can be purchased at http://www.jubileetheatre.org. We hope that you travel back to the Harlem Renaissance with us for one night!
